SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it will hold dozens of mountaintop removal permits for further review. Following is a statement by Michael Brune, Executive Director of Rainforest Action Network (RAN):

“Today was a moment of truth for the EPA. By recognizing the irreversible destruction caused by mountaintop removal coal mining, the EPA has taken an important stand in support of the people and ecosystems of Appalachia. The agency seems to recognize that there is no environmentally safe way to demolish mountains.

Toronto- A weeklong buzz around mysterious "please help us Mrs. Nixon" posters in downtown Toronto culminated today at the Royal Bank of Canada's (RBC) headquarters, where Rainforest Action Network (RAN) dropped a 15' x 30' banner appealing to Janet Nixon, the wife of CEO Gordon Nixon. Protestors scaled the 50' flagpole at the main entrance to the RBC headquarters on Bay and Wellington, replacing the flags with the 15' banner, which hung for 2.5 hours as employees, including Gordon Nixon, arrived for work at the bank. No consensus on climate change document at indigenous summit

Indigenous delegates at a UN conference on climate change in Alaska could not agree on a final summit document due to disagreements over oil and gas drilling on native lands.

Some delegations at the UN-sponsored Indigenous Peoples' Global Summit on Climate Change were demanding a complete moratorium. Others disputed that language, saying that the use of fossil fuels should be phased out but indigenous people should be allowed to develop their resources.

California’s Low Carbon Fuels Standard Could Impact Tar Sands Imports

CALIFORNIA (April 22, 2009) –Today, the California Air Resources Board is in the final stages of considering the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), the biggest step yet in the state's campaign to slash global warming emissions. California regulators are poised to order sweeping changes to regulate the fuel sold within the state. The LCFS discourages the use of tar sands oil and encourages low-carbon transportation fuels as a way to fight global warming.

44 Arrested for Protesting Duke’s Climate Hypocrisy

Charlotte, N.C.— Charlotte, N.C.— Police arrested 44 people for participating in a protest of Duke Energy’s plans to add massive additional coal burning to the company’s Cliffside plant. Those arrested include: Jim Warren of NC Warn; Bo Webb and Mike Roselle from Coal River Mountain in Appalachia; Larry Gibson and Mike McCoy-from Kentuckians for the Commonwealth; and several Rutherford County residents where the construction is underway. They will likely be charged with second-degree trespass.

Report Takes Aim at Climate Bill's Giant Carbon Polluter Loophole

A detailed analysis released today by two environmental organizations raises a red flag on the carbon offsetting provisions of the leading climate bill now moving through Congress.

The report from International Rivers and the Rainforest Action Network calls for removing giant carbon pollution loopholes from the Waxman-Markey bill, also known as the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACES). Otherwise, the report warns, the carbon cap will fall far short of hitting its targets.
