Global Finance

About the campaign

Rainforest Action Network's Global Finance Campaign works to change the way banks lend money so that they refuse to support projects that are bad for human rights and the environment. With the help of many other groups, RAN is bringing sanity and sustainability to the global economy. The all too real threats of forest destruction, species extinction and climate destabilization are proof of the urgency of our work.

There are already signs of hope! After years of grassroots activism and campaigning by countless volunteers, America’s three largest banks -- Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase -- have adopted policies that safeguard old growth and endangered forests, curb investments in climate change, and protect the rights of indigenous peoples. These new standards are important steps forward as we work to create a sustainable economy, but many companies are still lagging. Our task is now three-fold:

  • We must hold companies like Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase accountable to their commitments, ensuring that their policies are fully implemented and translate into real changes.
  • We must help the rest of the financial industry move towards creating a world that is responsible, sustainable and socially just.
  • We must support the efforts of all those around the world who are creating alternative institutions that reflect the diverse needs of local communities.

With your help, we will!

Taking action

Host a Movie Night
Currently, we have a movie about Wells Fargo’s financial support of the destructive coal extraction process known as Mountain Top Removal in the Appalachian mountains.

Learn economics... No, really!
Ask your economics teacher to talk about "externalities," which are the costs to people and the planet that corporations “externalize”. Have your teacher check out www.ran.org/education for lesson plans.

Connect the dots
Create a skit that explains the connection between Wells Fargo Bank and Mountaintop Removal and perform it in front of your local Wells Fargo branch. After each performance, pass out information about how people can call on Wells Fargo to stop funding dirty projects.

Check out www.dirtymoney.org for upcoming actions and more.
