Ending Mountaintop Removal

The end of mountaintop removal is this year.

Mountaintop removal, which provides approximately 7 percent of the nation's coal, is a devastating form of coal mining that involves clear-cutting forests, blowing the tops off of mountains, and then dumping the debris into streambeds. In the process, mountaintop removal poisons essential drinking water supplies and pollutes the air with coal and rock dust. People who live in the vicinity of the mining face increased risks of flooding, polluted water out of their taps, coal dust coating their homes and lungs and schools, daily explosions that rock their foundations.  They are losing their forests, their mountains, their peace of mind, and their homesteads and communities.

RAN believes that it is an abomination to destroy a mountain, much less a mountain range, in pursuit of a polluting source of energy -- especially now, at a time when alternatives are readily available and there is a new emphasis on building a green energy economy that can be designed to bring prosperity to low-income communities and sanity to our consumption patterns.

It is time to end the American tragedy of mountaintop removal. RAN is working with activists and allies to demand that political leaders and powerful banks take action - this year!

Obama's EPA

The Obama Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have the power to stop the destruction of mountaintop removal coal mining once and for all. Instead of taking a swift and decisive stand on the issue of MTR, administration and agency officials continue to stall and waffle, promising to "reduce the impacts of MTR." There is no kinder and gentler MTR, and at RAN, we don't believe there is an environmentally friendly way to blow the top off of a mountain! The Obama administration and the EPA must do everything in their power to end MTR - now!

Big Banks

JPMorgan Chase is the largest financier of mountaintop removal coal mining, investing hundreds of millions of dollars into this despicable practice. Instead of bankrolling this brutal, toxic and irreversibly destructive practice of destroying mountains for climate-killing coal, Chase should put their money on the right side of history. It's time for Chase to make millions by making history as a clean energy leader.

RAN is demanding that JPMorgan Chase immediately stop investing in companies that practice mountaintop removal, and that they move away from financing all dirty coal and toward a clean energy future.
