Dear President SBY and distingished leaders of Indonesia,

Despite a strong commitment from the Indonesian government to investigate the companies responsible for intentionally starting the fires in Tripa, we have continued to witness unabated further environmental destruction on the ground in Tripa: the continuous drainage of the peat and construction of new canals, more forests being cleared at an alarming rate, and at least 100 more major fires since the investigation was launched months ago.

Tripa is a litmus test for the legitimacy of the rule of law in Indonesia because if, in the face of such blatant and highly reported illegality, the Indonesia government does not take decisive action, it is as much as an acknowledgment that enforcement is selective and the laws are not worth the paper they are written on.

With respect, I urge you to call for an immediate halt to the destruction of the Tripa peat swamp and a full investgation into all companies that have oil palm concessions inside it. We urge prosecution of anyone found breaking the law and punishment of all offenders with the the full force of the Law.

A direct Presidential Instruction is urgently required to bring an immediate halt to the rampant and illegal destruction of Tripa, not a speech telling the world deforestation is a thing of the past.

I look forward to seeing your statement ordering an immediate halt to all destruction in Tripa. It is imperative to call an immediate stop to the land clearing, to stop the fires burning and to immediately block the canals that continue to destroy Tripa, even now, while you read my letter.

As many as 20 fires are again burning throughout the Tripa rainforest, one of the worlds most ecologically important forests.The extinction of the Sumtran orangutan is now a more imminent reality. The fires were intentionally started by palm oil companies as a means for clearing rainforests to make way for oil palm plantations and are so severe that they have created a regional air quality crisis in Malaysia.

Three months ago, when the first fires broke out, RAN supporters flooded the President of Indonesias inbox to demand he address this tragedy, sending a strong message that forced him to launch a task force investigating the palm oil companies that intentionally ignited the fires. But since then our allies have documented 86 new fire hotspots, and there is no concrete evidence that any further action has been taken.
