Position Summary
Rainforest Action Network, one of the world’s most effective campaigning organizations, is looking to hire a campaigner to challenge Chevron on its environmental and human rights record. Late this summer, we’ll be launching a new campaign to hold Chevron accountable for years of contamination and neglect in Ecuador and a rash of human rights and environmental abuses around the world. This will be a multi-year campaign and will be a top priority for the organization.
RAN is looking for an experienced and savvy campaigner and organizer with a passion for working with communities, protecting human rights, and protecting rainforests. The Chevron Campaigner will work with the new Chevron Campaign Director to help persuade the oil company to develop and implement a comprehensive climate, environmental and human rights policy that cleans up contaminated communities in Ecuador and brings the company’s global operations into alignment with 21st century social and environmental values.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 2 years of U.S.-based campaigning and organizing experience challenging corporations and/or other decision-makers;
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated experience with public speaking, writing and developing campaign materials, and networking and coalition building;
- Demonstrated experience with on-line organizing and campaigning as well as fluency in on-line tools and strategies and their deployment;
- A proven track record of working with diverse coalitions and coordinating with activists from various backgrounds;
- Expertise or a demonstrated interest in working with Indigenous and affected communities on human rights, development and sustainability issues;
- Expertise or a demonstrated interest with issues including nonviolent direct action, grassroots organizing, corporate social responsibility;
- Familiarity with some of the following issues: Corporate campaigning, diverse coalitions, biodiversity, and climate justice;
- Excellent prioritization and time management skills;
- Must be able to travel frequently;
- Must be able to work legally in the United States;
- Preferred is organizing or relevant work experience in Ecuador ;
- Optional are demonstrated research experience and capabilities;
- Proficiency or fluency in Spanish is highly beneficial.
Responsibilities
- Work with Campaign Director to develop campaign strategies to improve the climate, environmental and human rights performance of Chevron, one of the world’s largest corporations;
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with strategic local, regional, national and international NGOs;
- Stay abreast of climate, energy and human rights issues to inform campaign strategy;
- Work with grassroots organizing team and campaign staff to mobilize grassroots activists, coordinate field actions, and expand and diversify the networks working on these issues;
- Work with the grassroots team to represent the Chevron Campaign online, including creating content and managing communications for RAN’s online audiences, using Web 2.0 tools, RAN’s blog and other online channels;
- Write clear, concise and compelling prose, in the form of blog entries, op-eds, email alerts and/or essays;
- Help maintain communication and relationships with Indigenous and affected communities and ensure that RAN is an effective ally and partner;
- Work with Campaign Director and Development Department on grant reports, proposals and fundraising for both RAN and the campaign;
- Conduct or supervise research to support campaign goals and activities;
- Coordinate volunteers and empower and motivate grassroots activists in carrying out campaign tactics;
- Represent RAN and act as a public spokesperson for RAN as needed;
- Participate in RAN's organizational planning, anti-oppression and diversity initiatives and training sessions. Share office responsibilities to maintain a healthy and safe workplace.
